Orewa College’s Year 7 ANZAC Assembly on 2 May 2025 honoured Aotearoa’s servicemen and women. A moving ceremony with performances, historical reflections, and student-led tributes.

Hearts and Voices United in ANZAC Remembrance

On Friday, 2 May, Orewa College hosted its annual Year 7 ANZAC Assembly, a moving event that brought together ākonga, whānau, and the wider community in a solemn remembrance of Aotearoa's veterans. Hosted by Year 8 student councillors Skyler Olivier and Bella-Rose Skinner, the event has a shared goal of honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Lest we forget.

The ceremony opened with the stirring sound of bagpipes, expertly played by Maria Walker-Kinnell, setting the tone for the reflective occasion. Student-led moments included readings of historical letters from Gallipoli, a screening of videos on ANZAC history, and a reflective minute of silence.

The Ode of Remembrance was delivered in both Te Reo Māori and English by Lachlan Buckley, Connor Dalling, Brooke McGhie, and Anika Pihema, ensuring that all in attendance felt included in this important moment of reflection.

Following the assembly, students and guests laid a wreath in the memorial garden, accompanied once again by the haunting sound of bagpipes, a fitting conclusion to the ceremony. This moment marked the end of another memorable and cherished Orewa College tradition.

Orewa College would like to acknowledge the ongoing support of Silverdale RSA and Kings Empire Veterans, whose dedication to our ANZAC Assemblies has spanned over a decade. Their continued support strengthens the bond between our kura and the broader service community.

As a school community, we remain deeply grateful for the opportunity to come together in this annual tradition. The ANZAC Day ceremony not only reflects our commitment to honoring those who served but also unites us in remembrance and reflection.

Ngā mihi to all those who attended and helped make this event so meaningful.
