Orewa College students planted 600 native trees at Ahuroa, helping restore the local environment

29 May 2025: On a crisp Monday morning, 28 Year 7 and 8 students from Orewa College headed out to Ahuroa for a hands-on environmental mission to plant nearly 600 native trees.

The trees, which were grown right here at kura, will help prevent erosion, improve water quality, and create much-needed habitat for native flora and other wildlife. It’s part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability and learning beyond the classroom.

The planting site was selected to support a local stream system. With spades in hand and mud on their boots, our students got stuck in, working together to carefully plant and protect each tree. The experience gave them the chance to connect with te taiao and see the real impact of their mahi.

To top it all off, the group was treated to a well-earned hot lunch, a perfect end to a rewarding day outdoors.

The day was not only a celebration of environmental learning, but also a reminder that every small action counts.
